Portugal's captain was presented the award by France Football last month, capping a golden year in which he became a European champions with club and country, winning the Champions League and the European Championship.

And his Real Madrid side went into today's game three points clear at the top of La Liga with a game in hand after an incredible 38 games unbeaten in all competitions.

Ronaldo has not missed any opportunity to show off his latest Ballon d'Or and two hours before the match revealed he would be wearing a new pair of Nike boots in a photo with the award on Instagram.

The Los Blancos star edged out Lionel Messi to be named the best player of 2016, but Barcelona star Messi still has one more award than Ronaldo in total, with five Ballon d'Ors to his name

A win for Real Madrid today will see them equal Barcelona's record of 39 games undefeated, which was set by Luis Enrique's team two years ago.
