Hernandez, who was sold by United for just £7m, has also been attracting interest from Liverpool and Tottenham as both sides search for more firepower.

And although Leverkusen are keen to keep him in the Bundesliga, sporting director Rudi Voller accepts they’ll have no choice but to let the Mexican go if the offer is too good to turn down.

Liverpool and Tottenham have also been linked with Chicharito

He said: “We need a working Chicharito to achieve our goals. It is clear that there are pain thresholds in this crazy transfer market, however.

“But there is no approach at the moment.”

One man who wouldn’t have let United sell Hernandez is current boss Jose Mourinho, who claims he would have kept on a ton of stars at Old Trafford including Nemanja Vidic and reported target Patrice Evra.

Referring to the squad following Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement, Mourinho commented: “I wouldn’t mind to be at a club with great expectations, but to have Ryan Giggs and Chicharito, I think Vidic still in the team, Evra, I wouldn’t mind.”
