They went back in with bids of £15m and £18m, and are now understood to be lining up a £25m swoop in January.

“I like good players and maybe he is a good player. But I don’t like to start focusing on some names. Then you start a rumour.”

But Poch insists his side IS good enough to win the Premier League, even if they don’t add to their squad in January.

He added: “I am happy with the squad. At the same time I recognise it is always very difficult to improve the squad in January.

“With the best players, it is difficult for their teams to allow the good players to leave halfway through the season.

“If some special situation happens, maybe we need to be open. But it will be tough or difficult to improve the squad in that period.

“Last season the table was the same – seven, eight points with Leicester – I think it’s realistic – the gap is 10 points but a lot of games to play.

“We can fight for the title at the end of the season. It’s up to us to fight and be ambitious and try to be our best.

“We are 17 games in, we have more than half the season ahead, all is possible in football.

“It’s important to cross this Christmas period in a very good position and attack the last three months and try and fight.”
