David Luiz returned to Chelsea because he wanted to become a leader

'I like to organise, I try to be a leader in the dressing room, I try to help my team-mates and the club – that’s why I came back'

DAVID LUIZ re-signed for Chelsea because he wanted to become a leader.

“I like to organise, I try to be a leader in the dressing room too. I try to help my team-mates and the club – that’s why I came back," he explained.

And his influence is certainly showing on and off the pitch.

The Brazilian international has attracted his fair share of critics over the years, but since returning to Stamford Bridge has excelled at the back.

Chelsea have been on an outstanding winning run and made it 11 straight Premier League victories with a 1-0 win at Crystal Palace on Saturday as their 3-5-2 formation came up trumps once again.

Antonio Conte’s side enjoyed another clean sheet – they have conceded just two goals in their fantastic winning run – and Luiz has admitted how much he has needed to step up, particularly with John Terry struggling for first team action.

He told: “I love the club, because I had the opportunity, because I think it was my purpose to come back.

“Decisions in football happen quickly. When Chelsea came to me and said they wanted me to come back I was happy because I had a special moment here – one of the best in my career. I won the Champions League, the Europa League.

“Paris was also amazing for me – I spent two years there and I was winning a lot. But I decided to come back.

“I am a lucky player, I was living in Paris and now I’m back in London, so I can’t complain. My life is great.”

Luiz, 29, has won 10 of his 25 tackles in the league this season and played in every single minute of Chelsea’s 11-game streak that has taken them to the top of the Premier League.
