Manchester United outcast Anthony Martial admits being benched by Jose Mourinho is ‘annoying’ but vows to fight for place
Frenchman has failed to impress new boss this season and was dropped from squad for win over Crystal Palace in the week
ANTHONY MARTIAL admits he’s found it ‘annoying’ being on the bench under Jose Mourinho.
But the Frenchman has vowed to win his place back in the Manchester United starting XI ahead of Saturday’s trip to West Brom.
Despite starring for the Red Devils in his debut season, Martial has made just ten league appearances in the new campaign.
The former Monaco star could end up costing United a whopping £57.6million if he scores 25 competitive goals, earns 25 caps for France and finishes in the top three for the Ballon d’Or before his contract expires in June 2019.
However, Martial’s future at Old Trafford is far from clear after being left out of the matchday squad to face Crystal Palace earlier in this week.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic has cemented his place as United’s main forward, while the return of Henrikh Mkhitaryan means competition is fiercer than ever.
Only time will tell if Martial can force his way back into Mourinho’s plans, but the Frenchman is confident he can re-establish himself at the Theatre of Dreams after growing tired with life on the sideline.
Martial told : “It’s annoying, it’s really annoying, but it’s a challenge you have to overcome and that’s how you progress. It’s hard. All you want to do is try and help your team, and when you’re on the bench you can’t. In the end, these are choices and you have to accept them.
“No, I know people expect a lot from me. Maybe they also forget I’m still young at times. They can say what they want, to be honest, it won’t change anything.”
