The Spanish chief said: "I am so, so sad.

"We will have to go without him for a long time. This is the worst news of the day."

It confirms the worst fears of the Etihad chief, who after the game claimed: "We will know the diagnosis tomorrow, but it doesn’t look good.”

City defender Pablo Zabaleta added: “It looks bad. It’s the same knee.

“We feel so sorry for him because it’s been quite tough for him at the beginning of the season.

“He has been working so hard and he was playing well.

“Unfortunately, now it is the same knee. But he has to keep strong and see how bad it is.”

Gundogan was enjoying a productive season after getting up to speed with the Premier League, netting five times - including braces against Barcelona and West Brom.

But it is just the latest in a long line of injuries for the German who suffered an incredibly large amount of knocks during his Borussia Dortmund days.

On top of his bad knee, he has suffered with a spinal issue - which kept him out for over a year between 2013 and 2014 - as well as ankle, neck, thigh, foot and abductor muscle injuries to name a few.

City will be hoping this will be the last of his severe injuries, but they will already be without him until at least the beginning of the 2017-18 season now...
