Adam Lallana marked his return to Jurgen Klopp's starting XI with a smart finish after just five minutes, before Dimitri Payet levelled with a free-kick that Karius should have kept out.

Michail Antonio then took advantage of a Joel Matip mistake and Karius' indecision to put the Hammers ahead just before the break.

But Divock Origi pounced on the worst keeping howler of the lot, as Randolph dropped a Sadio Mane cross at the Belgian's feet for a simple tap-in early in the second half.

Reds looked more likely to bag a winner, with Jordan Henderson allowing Randolph some redemption when the Republic of Ireland international produced a stunning finger-tip save.

FACTS, STATS, GOALS & LOLS

  • Alberto Moreno gave an interview in the match programme promising to get a special tattoo if Liverpool win the EFL Cup. As you would expect as he is a footballer, it will not be his first bit of inking. . .
  • Slaven Bilic sprung a surprise by playing Michail Antonio up front in a 4-1-4-1. Antonio, back from injury, was expected to be a wing-back. After the battering by Arsenal, Bilic obviously realised something needed changing.

  • It was incredibly mild up here in the north-west but three outfield players still wore gloves – West Ham winning 2-1. Pedro Obiang and Angelo Ogbonna for the visitors and Divock Origi for Liverpool.
  • West Ham’s back four were all over the place as Liverpool opened the scoring after just five minutes. Adam Lallana needed just one touch before striking the ball past Darren Randolph.
  • Liverpool keeper Loris Karius is getting a fair amount of stick and deservedly so. But he just managed to get a glove to keep out an early effort from Antonio following some lousy defending by Dejan Lovren.
  • Yet Karius will feel he should have done better with Dimitri Payet sending a free-kick over the wall and into the net for a shock leveller. It was Payet’s third of the season. Equally, Lallana was also at fault. Firstly he gave away the free-kick and then did not bother to jump and the ball went over his head.
  • Anfield suddenly became a bit quiet. Apart from the West Ham fans. It was 2-1. Karius was then hopelessly exposed by defender Joel Matip who failed to deal with Havard Nordtveit’s deflected punt. Antonio could not believe his luck and lifted the ball into the net.
  • There was not just one dodgy keeper on show, though. Shortly into the second half, Darren Randolph made a complete mess of Mane’s cross and the ball fell perfectly for Origi to score. Mane deserves credit for the way he teased Winston Reid before finally getting in a cross.

  • Andy Carroll arrived in the 62nd minute. There were a few jeers for the former Liverpool man but he generally got a decent reception.Antonio returned to wing-back.
  • Randolph redeemed himself with one of the saves of the season. Henderson's strike which was heading for the top right-hand corners wold certainly have been one of the campaign's stand-out goals.
  • Watching the game were former Liverpool keepers Bruce Grobbelaar and Ray Clemence, You have to wonder what they were thinking about the home keeper but neither seemed to be having much fun.

WHAT THEY SAID

West Ham winger Michail Antonio: "I managed to finally get one with my feet! If it was my head again I would still be buzzing but it was great that it was my feet and hopefully I can keep on doing it. The celebration was 'Running Man'. I am sticking with the 90s theme.

"We showed we have determination and grit and showed that what happens in the past doesn't affect us. A great point away and we have to push on and build on this."

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp: "We tried everything. One West Ham goal was a free-kick and one was lucky. It was a big surprise for everybody when we couldn't clear it, so they were 2-1 up and we had some great offensive situations first half and we should have more.

"In the second half we tried everything. So it's a draw, we have to take it. It felt like the whole time we were were in their box. We needed a bit of luck. A draw doesn't feel too good but it doesn't feel too bad either."
