Fortunately for the defender, his side went on to inflict a 3-1 defeat on their hosts and open up a four-point gap at the top of the Premier League table.

But Cahill’s latest Blues gaffe means he’s set an unenviable record as the man to score the most goals past teammate Courtois in the English top flight.

The 30-year-old has now found the back of his own net twice with the Belgian between the sticks.

Fan favourite Kurt Zouma is closing in on a long-awaited return from injury, while Borussia Monchengladbach loanee Andreas Christensen remains a long-term prospect.

He said: “We were 1-0 down but we had a lot of pressure to soak up in the first half. We knew we were in the game. We got to 1-1 and started building the momentum and showed a lot of character.

“We’re not at Christmas yet but it’s encouraging to have eight wins (in a row) now and it was a test. We showed another side to our football and we’re delighted.”
