Jamie Vardy is the only Englishman on the FIFA World XI shortlist as 16 Premier League players are nominated

Wayne Rooney is not in contention for the first time since the competition started 12 years ago

JAMIE VARDY is the only Englishman to be nominated alongside the likes of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo for a place in the FIFA World 11.

55 players have been nominated for the award which includes 16 Premier League stars.

However Leicester's striker is the only Brit who stands a chance of earning a spot after his 24 goals fired the Foxes to Premier League glory.

His former team-mate N'Golo Kante is one of the finalists but Riyad Mahrez misses out despite his heroics last campaign.

Mesut Ozil, David Silva, Dimitri Payet, Hector Bellerin and Eden Hazard are just some of the Premier League stars on the shortlist.

Ronaldo and goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon are the only two names who have made the shortlist every year since the start of the competition 12 years ago.

And for the first time, Manchester United skipper Wayne Rooney is not on the shortlist.

The shortlist is tallied from votes by nearly 25,000 footballers over around 70 different countries.

Each player selects one goalkeeper, four defenders, three midfielders and three forwards before the World XI is eventually announced in January.

Barcelona have the most players representing them with 12, two more than rivals Real Madrid.
