STEVEN GERRARD couldn't resist watching his boyhood club exactly 18 years after making his senior Liverpool debut.

The retired midfielder was snapped in the stands as the Reds hope to progress to the EFL Cup semi-finals with a win over Leeds.

Liverpool's former captain, who made over 700 appearances for the club, arrived at Anfield through the players' entrance ahead of the clash.

Gerrard has time on his hands after announcing his retirement following a spell at LA Galaxy.

But the 36-year-old is not short of options having already rejected the chance to manage MK Dons.

And it looks increasingly likely that Gerrard could be back at Liverpool after Jurgen Klopp left the door open for a coaching role.

According to the , Gerrard is understood to be close to taking on a position in Liverpool’s academy.

Newcastle United boss Rafa Benitez has also revealed that he is willing to provide Gerrard with advice should he decide to go into management.

Benitez, who was Kop chief between 2004-2014, said: “Maybe he can be a good coach in the future.

“If he wants to talk to me about that, we can be in contact and then I can give him some good ideas, and I’m sure the club will give him some ideas."
