Gerrard made his Liverpool debut all the way back in the 1998-99 season, when the Reds took on Blackburn in the Premier League.

However it wasn't until the 1999-2000 season that Stevie G really made his mark on the Anfield side, swapping right-midfield for a central berth and thriving after learning how to tackle his nerves.

It wasn't long until his dynamic play - both tough in the tackle and equipped with a lethal right boot - caught the attention of the England set-up as he made his debut in May 2000, when the Three Lions took on Ukraine.

The 2000-01 campaign was a truly remarkable one for both Gerrard and Liverpool.

The midfielder helped the Reds to a stunning five trophies in just 12 months - getting their hands on the FA Cup, League Cup, Uefa Cup, Uefa Super Cup and Community Shield.

After quickly establishing himself as the key man on Merseyside, Gerrard was handed the captaincy by then-boss Gerard Houllier - replacing Sami Hyypia in 2003 - with the Frenchman citing his exceptional leadership qualities.

With the Reds skipper continually linked with a move to Chelsea, it appeared Gerrard's future lay away from Anfield.

However, Gerrard remained loyal to his boyhood club kicking off a new era at Liverpool under new boss Rafa Benitez in 2004.

Benitez helped lead Liverpool to their best achievement of the Premier League era in his first season, as Gerrard played an integral role in leading the club to a remarkable Champions League triumph.

With the club on the brink of a group stage elimination - needing three second half goals against Olympiakos - Gerrard popped up with mere minutes left on the clock to score arguably the most famous goal of his career.

The midfielder thumped home a swerving 20-yard effort to send the Kop into raptures... And the knockout stages.

After beating the likes of Bayer Leverkusen, Juventus and Chelsea en route to the final, it was Gerrard who inspired another three-goal, second-half turnaround during the 'Miracle Of Istanbul'.

The England man's header early in the second-half reduced the deficit to just two - and once the game was tied up, he switched to right-back to help shore up the defence in a game the Reds would go on to famously win on penalties over one of the greatest AC Milan XIs of all time.

A year later and Gerrard was at it again, winning the 'Gerrard Final' in the 2006 FA Cup against West Ham.

He netted twice, including an incredible 30-yard strike while ridden with cramp to level the game at 3-3, before another heroic spot-kick victory - in which he scored Liverpool's third penalty.

While the Reds never got their hands on the Premier League title - coming closest in 2013-14 when Gerrard famously slipped against Chelsea - the Reds still enjoyed some success.

The Reds won the League Cup in 2011-12 to go with some individual success, such as being named in the PFA Premier League Team of the Year in 2014 to go with his 2009 FWA Footballer of the Year gong.

Internationally Gerrard burst on to the scene when he netted the second goal of England's thumping 5-1 win over Germany in Munich in 2001.

He would go on to make 114 appearances - the fourth-most in the country's history - netting 21 times before his 2013 retirement, following the World Cup disappointment.

A year later and Gerrard upped sticks, finally leaving Liverpool to embark on a new life in America.

He joined MLS outfit the LA Galaxy, where he spent the last two years of his playing career, turning out 34 times and netting five goals in the process.
