Luis Figo burgled as thieves pinch more than £425,000 worth of watches and jewellery from ex-Real Madrid star’s home

Criminals also took bundles of cash while Figo and model wife Helen Svedin were out of their Madrid house on Tuesday

BURGLARS have stolen designer watches and jewellery worth around £425,000 during a raid on the home of former Real Madrid and Barcelona star Luis Figo.

The criminals also took cash after breaking into the empty property in Madrid late on Tuesday night.

They are believed to have forced their way in through a first-floor terrace door after climbing the front of the house.

Figo, a candidate in last year’s race to become new FIFA president with the backing of friend and former teammate David Beckham, was not at home at the time but reported it to police soon after returning in the early hours of yesterday morning/Wednesday morning.

Police sources confirmed the break-in but said they were still investigating and could not comment further.

They are understood to have CCTV images of the burglars which they are currently analysing.

Figo, who famously had a pig’s head thrown at him in Barcelona’s Camp Nou stadium in 2002 by supporters who branded him a turncoat over his controversial move to Real Madrid, has been an ambassador for the IWC Swiss luxury watch brand.

He is now a successful businessman with commercial interests all over the world, including a mining firm operating out of two bases in Africa, and has an estimated fortune of nearly £40million.

The dad-of-three, married to Swedish model Helen Svedin, boasted of how he was enjoying a “sweet moment” in life in an interview with a Spanish daily earlier this week.

He said: “Many days I don’t do anything and that is good. I have other projects which are not linked to football.

“I devote time to my family, travelling, enjoying life, playing golf, being with my friends. Things I couldn’t do when I didn’t have as much time.”

Figo announced his intention to run against then FIFA president Sepp Blatter in January last year.

His endorsers included Jose Mourinho and David Beckham.

He withdrew from the election campaign in May 2015.

Figo’s home in the exclusive Madrid neighbourhood of Parque de Conde de Orgaz was previously targeted in 2003 when three men armed with guns forced their way
in and took an unspecified amount of valuables.
