NEW JOB GARETH?

Gareth Southgate is all smiles as he leaves St. George’s Park after interview for England job

Interim boss looked a happy man after holding talks with FA chiefs for Three Lions permanent role

JOB interviews are always stressful... But it looks like Gareth Southgate's England one went well judging by the smile on his face.

The former Middlesbrough manager was grinning like the cat that got the milk after holding talks with senior FA chiefs on Monday.

He stepped up from his position at Under-21s boss in September to take temporary charge of his country following the Sam Allardyce scandal.

Initially only appointed for a four-match period, he led England to victories over Malta and Scotland and a draw against Slovenia to help continue the march to the World Cup 2018.

His final game in charge was against Spain last week, and despite conceding two late goals to have another win snatched cruelly snatched away from him, his side produced a fine display in the 2-2 draw to leave fans and FA chiefs impressed.

Southgate was at the national football centre to try and persuade the five decision makers he deserves the role permanently after his interim spell.

He spoke with FA chairman Greg Clarke, FA chief executive Martin Glenn, FA technical director Dan Ashworth, ex-Leeds manager Howard Wilkinson and former Chelsea defender Graeme Le Saux.

As Southgate emerged from the discussions smiling, Glenn and Le Saux had a more serious look on their faces as they were snapped leaving the Burton-on-Trent complex together.
Glenn revealed on Friday that that Southgate has made it clear that he wants the job permanently.

But he also hinted that the FA may wish to speak to other  candidates and stressed “this  interview process has to be  discreet’’ — but he also indicated Southgate was “in a strong  position” for the role.

Glenn added: “Not just  the facts of the last four games have shown a lot of signs of encouragement but the fact he’s worked in the FA for the last couple of years.”
