Sunderland 3 Hull 0: Watch the highlights as Jermain Defoe and Victor Anichebe grab goals as darkness envelops Stadium of Light

SUNDERLAND moved off the bottom of the table with a second successive Premier League win over Hull – but not before the Stadium of Light was dramatically plunged into darkness.

Jermain Defoe and Victor Anichebe grabbed the vital goals for David Moyes’ side as they took three points for only the second time this season.

But play had to be stopped in the second half when all the floodlights bizarrely turned off.

Players from both sides left the pitch as those behind the scenes worked frantically to fix the problem.

But the fans certainly enjoyed the moment as they switched on their phones to use as makeshift torches in the stands.

And it was joy for Defoe when he fired in his 150th Premier League goal in the 34th minute, beating two Hull players before putting Sunderland ahead.

Anichebe then doubled his side’s lead in the 62nd minute as he latched onto a cross from Patrick van Aanholt before hitting an absolute screamer with eight minutes remaining.

But it wasn’t a perfect day for the Black Cats, who lost Papy Djilobodji to a second yellow card in the dying moments.

• The King was back in town at Sunderland. Black Cats legend Charlie Hurley, who turned 80 last month, was paraded on the pitch before kick-off after having his own gates unveiled at the Stadium of Light earlier in the day.
• David Moyes and Mike Phelan put the past behind them with a handshake before kick-off. Moyes sacked Alex Ferguson’s No2 Phelan when he took charge of Manchester United in 2013.
• Left-back Josh Tymon was making his Premier League debut for Hull at the age of 17.
• Jordan Pickford proved why Moyes is right to keep him in goal despite No1 Vito Mannone’s return to fitness. He produced a string of saves to keep the Tigers out before Jermain Defoe’s opener.
• Lamine Kone continues to look out of sorts. The centre-half is a shadow of the player that helped Sunderland to safety last season following his January arrival.

• Defoe’s goal was his 150th in the Premier League – only the eighth player to reach that landmark.
• The Stadium of Light became the Stadium of Darkness after a second-half floodlight failure. Play was suspended for nine minutes when there was a power cut in the 49th minute.
• Victor Anichebe has now scored in both of his Sunderland starts and has completely changed the complexion of Moyes’ team – offering Defoe support and occupying defenders.
• This was only the third time Sunderland have enjoyed back-to-back league wins in 2016 – and the first time in the Prem for Moyes since April 2014.
• Hull have now not kept a league clean sheet in ten games and have lost seven of their last eight matches.

Sunderland boss David Moyes: “It was a great way to get the win in the end but it was an eventful day and it was end to end. It could have been five each. But thankfully we’ve got a very good young goalkeeper and when we got our chances we took them.

“I’ve got two in-form strikers and I hope they remain that way because everybody knows about Jermain. I think today he scored his 150^th goal and only people that know about goals understand just how hard that is.

“Victor has been very good as a team player. He was like a young Drogba, he was that good today.

“The last thing I needed was for this game to be abandoned. It’s so important to get that first goal and when we got in front it wasn’t just, because I though Hull were the better team.”
