OLIVIER GIROUD netted a late equaliser as Arsenal came back from the dead against Manchester United at Old Trafford.

It took until the second half, but Mata finally broke the deadlock with a superb first-time finish from 15 yards following an Ander Herrera pull-back.

In all honesty, it had been coming as Arsenal began to wilt under the pressure at Old Trafford, moments after Wayne Rooney was introduced for Anthony Martial by Mourinho.

Wenger attempted to force the issue by bringing super-sub Olivier Giroud off the bench, as the Gunners failed to find top gear.

However, Wenger's subs worked a treat as Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain - playing at right-back - delivered a great cross for Giroud to powerfully head beyond David De Gea.

Completely deserved it may not have been, but Arsenal battled late to go home with a share of the spoils.

STATS, FACTS, GOALS & LOLS

  • ARSENAL fans have got it in for Mourinho. They sang "f*** offMourinho" throughout the first half and followed it up with "you're not special any more". He responded by sarcastically waving to the travelling fans.
  • GARY NEVILLE went in to bat for substitute Wayne Rooney before the game. He claimed it was "poor" that he was forced to apologise for his drinking binge and went on to say the rest of the England squad should have taken collective responsibility.
  • MOURINHO'S faux astonishment at Andre Marriner's decision to wave play on when Monreal tangled with Valencia was comical. The Special One kept covering his eyes in bewilderment as Monreal demanded a yellow card.

  • OZIL'S silky nutmeg on Ander Herrera was one of the classiest touches by an Arsenal player in the first half.
  • MATA'S touches from the right make a difference to United going forward. At times he plays the game a second or so ahead of his team-mates. His finish for United's goal was exceptional.
  • "ROONEY, Rooney" chanted the Stretford End when the United forward starting warming up.. before changing it to "Rooney's on a bender" and "Wayne Rooney, he drinks when he wants".

  • THE United forward got on after 63 minutes to replace Antony Martial. Gary Neville has hinted at problems in Martial's personal life as one of the reasons behind his spectacular dip in form.
  • WHAT chance has Alexis Sanchez got to make an impact when he has barely been back in the county after international duty. Sanchez got back on Thursday night, trained Friday and travelled to Manchester with Arsenal yesterday. If we want top players to perform, they need recovery.

SOCIAL SAYS

WHAT THEY SAID

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger: "Last year we would have maybe lost this game and today we didn't so we have improved on that front. Hopefully now we can kick on with some wins."

Arsenal forward Theo Walcott: "I would say we’d probably want more from the first-half performance especially. They had a lot of the play second half, a point at Old Trafford is obviously good but you want more if you’re challenging for the title.

"We snatched it at the end, we worked hard. We started off the season very well, we’ve had a bit of a blip but we’ve still managed to get results. In years gone by we might have probably lost this game."

Man United scorer Juan Mata: "[We're] very frustrated, we were really close to winning but that is football. In the Premier League every teams fights until the end. They had one chance at the end of the game and it was a great header from Giroud."

Man United boss Jose Mourinho: "We're the unluckiest team in the Premier League."
