Southgate gave the players a night off. They pulled an all-nighter. To leave The Grove under the radar, to arrange the short trip to a London nightclub, would have taken a bit of organising.
Word out of the England camp is they sheepishly returned to The Grove about the same time Rooney finally went to bed at 5am.
Two hours later Southgate was up and about having breakfast, planning the afternoon training session for the players with his coaching staff.
By then, his authority had been undermined.
