World Cup 2022: Qatari chief vows there will be alcohol available at tournament

Good news for thirsty soccer fans braving temperatures of 50 degrees C: 'It will be available in certain areas, absolutely'

ALCOHOL will be available when Qatar host the World Cup in 2022.

Thirsty football fans, who are expected to brave temperatures of  50 degrees C during the European off-season in June and July, will welcome the news.

For Hassan Al Thawad, General Secretary of the Supreme Committee for World Cup 2022, insists there will be alcohol served at the tournament in six years time...but only in certain areas.

He said: "I'd like to clarify first and foremost our position has never changed from the beginning when we submitted out bid.

"Alcohol will be available. It won't be available in public spaces, it won't be available on the streets but it will be available.

"It will be available in certain areas, absolutely."
Alcohol is essentially a no-goer in Qatar. It is an offence to drink or be drunk in public.  But it is available at licensed hotel restaurants and bars, and expatriates can obtain alcohol on a permit system.
But no one carries it around, except to take it on the day of collection from the warehouse to your home.
