Manchester United transfer news: Jose Mourinho gives up on his chase for Monaco’s Fabinho but has another option

Ligue 1's side progress in the Champions League means the club would not be willing to sell until at least the summer

JOSE MOURINHO has been forced to concede his chase for Monaco full-back Fabinho is over.

The Portuguese boss is desperate to land a right-back when the January transfer window opens and eyed a swoop for the talented Brazilian having missed out on his signature over the summer.

But he may need to turn his attentions elsewhere after Monaco's progress in the Champions League.

The French side are unwilling to sell whilst they remain in Europe's elite competition and with Monaco sat two points clear of their group, it looks likely that he will remain at the Ligue 1 side until at least next summer.

The 23-year-old, touted as one of the world's most exciting full-backs, only signed a new contract in the summer.

However it is believed it was to prevent Fabinho leaving for a cut-price fee as Man City also plot his progress.

Mourinho will look to turn his attentions elsewhere with Paris-Saint Germain's bad-boy Serge Aurier a potential target.

The explosive defender could be available for £18million having been shrouded in controversy including a two month prison sentence and a throat-slitting gesture towards Mali fans.

Any deal will mean Mourinho would be willing to let outcast Matteo Darmian leave.
