TIM SHERWOOD decided to sit in the dugout for Swindon Town's FA Cup first round replay against Eastleigh.

But it was an unhappy return pitch-side for the former Tottenham and Aston Villa boss as he watched his League One outfit exit the FA Cup in the first round with a 3-1 replay defeat to Eastleigh.

This has predictably led to fierce criticism of the team's performance on Twitter, as well as ridiculing Sherwood's appointment as director of football.

Jai Reason put the National League side into a 15th minute lead, and Andy Drury added a second to put Eastleigh in the driving seat for a famous cup shock.

The away fans, all 700 of them, were then sent into raptures when Mikael Mandron netted from the penalty spot to make it 3-0.

The Robins gave themselves an outside chance of mounting a comeback when Nathan Delfouneso netted with 11 minutes to go, but it was too little too late for the League One outfit.

The two teams drew 1-1 in the first leg at Eastleigh's Silver Lake Stadium.

Twitter users have labelled the shock scoreline "the Tim Sherwood effect", while some blast the decision to bring in the former Premier League boss.

Sherwood was installed as director of football to assist rookie boss Luke Williams, who is in his first managerial role.

However, following the Robins' 3-0 win against Charlton on Saturday, Williams made it clear he is happy to learn from Sherwood, and would welcome him to the bench.

But that move doesn't appear to be a good one, with Sherwood hoping for a massive comeback after the minnows of Eastleigh tonight.

Swindon are struggling down in 19th spot in League One.
