Interim boss wants to throw the dice with Kane against Scotland but will turn to Rooney if Spurs star is ruled out
GARETH SOUTHGATE will wait to see if Harry Kane is fit enough to face Scotland in tomorrow’s Wembley showdown.
England’s interim boss plans to restore Wayne Rooney to his old role as a central striker if the Tottenham star is ruled out.
Kane has played just 73 minutes in the last two months, making his Spurs comeback after an ankle injury — and scoring — in Sunday’s 1-1 draw at Arsenal.

Boss Mauricio Pochettino gave the go- ahead for Kane, 23, to link up with England for the World Cup qualifier.
And Southgate wants him to start after the Three Lions’ struggles up front against Malta and Slovenia last month.
But if Kane is on the bench, captain Rooney is likely to get the nod ahead of Liverpool’s Daniel Sturridge and Leicester’s Jamie Vardy.
Rooney is back in form for Manchester United with a goal against Fenerbahce last week and starring in the 3-1 win at Swansea.
Spurs full-backs Kyle Walker and Danny Rose are also injury worries.
West Ham’s Aaron Cresswell admits he is in dreamland after his first call-up. The defender, 26, is only just back after a knee injury.
He said: “To come back after three months, play a few games then get called up to the national side, it’s stuff dreams are made of.”
