JONJO SHELVEY faces a lengthy ban after being charged with alleged racial abuse of an opponent.

The Newcastle star aimed 'racial, ethnic or national' abuse at a Wolves player, according to the FA.

Shelvey has been charged with misconduct after the game which occurred almost two months ago.

Newcastle lost the match 2-0 and Shelvey has until November 16 to give a response.

An FA statement read: “It is alleged that in or around the 87th minute of the fixture, he used abusive and/or insulting worlds towards a Wolves player.

“It is further alleged that this breach of Rule E3(1) is an ‘Aggravated Breach’ as defined in Rule E3(2) as it included reference to ethnic origin and/or race and/or nationality.”

Shelvey has impressed at St James' Park after joining from Swansea for £12million at the start of the year.

The 24-year-old has already made 34 appearances for Newcastle but could be out for a long time if found guilty.
