There were other Marca-sponsored awards dished out, with Atletico's Diego Simeone named the best boss in the division and Jan Oblak and Alvaro Morata also scooping gongs.

Ronaldo bagged the Alfredo di Stefano award, having also struck 16 times in Europe as Real became European champions for the 11th time in their history.

He then went and helped his country to their first-ever major trophy by beating hosts France in the Euro 2016 final.

The Portuguese said: 'The 2015-16 season was filled with many emotions with the Champions League and the European Championship.

"Today has also been a very special day with my contract renewal and a prize from Marca. What else I can ask for?

"I'm very happy. This motivates me to keep working and get better in the next few years."

Ronaldo's club-mate Morata was named the best player in the Spanish national team for the previous season, having netted three goals during their failed Euros campaign.

Atletico's Oblak won the Zamora trophy for conceding the least goals in the top flight - after keeping a stunning 24 clean sheets.

Luis Suarez was the only man to net more times than Ronaldo in La Liga and was handed the Pichichi trophy for his 40 strikes.
