The German's gung-ho side managed a whopping 17 of their 28 total shots on target, with only Watford goalkeepers Huerelho Gomes and then Costel Pantilimon stopping the score from being even higher.

Manchester United (2008), Arsenal (2009) and Manchester City (2015) jointly held the previous record with 16 shots on target in a single match, according to stats gurus Opta.

But the Reds broke the record with more shots than in any match since records began in 2003-04.

Philippe Coutinho, Emre Can and Georginio Wijnaldum all scored with their only shot on target.

Even Lucas, scorer of six goals in 300 matches for the Reds, managed an attempt at goal.

In comparison goal-shy Sunderland - who picked up their first win of the season at Bournemouth - have only managed 28 shots on target in 11 matches this season.

Klopp's swashbuckling side are also the top scoring side in the division with 30 in 11 matches this season.

The charismatic manager admitted his side looked "pretty good" but played down any talk of winning the title.

He said: We didn't speak one word about the possibility of being top of the table.

"For me it's more important that we look like a team who is able to win games.

"When I came here I asked for time and patience and belief, and after 11 matches everyone's asking for guarantees and they are not there."

Watford boss Walter Mazzarri said the Reds were the "best team" his side had faced this season.
