The Tigers were forced to make two first-half changes due to injuries, with Abel Hernandez and Will Keane being replaced by Dieumerci Mbokani and Robert Snodgrass, with the latter making a positive impact from the bench.

Hull came out fighting in the second half and scored two goals in as many minutes to give themselves the lead.

Snodgrass scored on the hour mark after sweeping Sam Clucas' low pass into the far corner past Fraser Forster.

The Scotsman then assisted from a deep free-kick minutes later as Michael Dawson's header looped into the top corner.

Hull have recorded their first Premier League win since August whilst Saints have lost their second Premier League match in a row.

FACTS, STATS, GOALS & LOLS

  • As Saints fans sing, Charlie Austin scores goals, and the former QPR man has now notched eight this season, including two in the Europa League and one in the EFL Cup.
  • With so few players in the squad already, Hull can ill afford more injuries. But they lost their two starting strikers Abel Hernandez and Will Keane in the opening 25 minutes with injuries which look serious.
  • Hull legend Dean Windass has still got it. The City ambassador was on the pitch at half-time for a Crossbar Challenge game, and narrowly missed the bar with his attempt in his brown brogues, putting it into the top corner.
  • With City fans continue their protest against the Allam family, there were vast areas of empty seats at the KCom Stadium. The crowds have gone from nearly 25,000 against Manchester United in August to less than 15,000.

  • He may be one of the most technically gifted players in the Southampton squad but Dusan Tadic was fortunate to stay on the pitch for a high nasty challenge on Ryan Mason. Referee Graham Scott gave the Serbian midfielder the benefit.
  • Next up for Hull is an unenviable clash at Sunderland. This could be the battle which decides who is the worst in Premier League not just this season, but ever.
  • City skipper Michael Dawson scored the unfortunate own goal which cost his side a point at West Brom last week. His headed goal was his first in the league for more than a year.

  • Hull have struggled to create and convert chances this season. Sam Clucas’s assist for Robert Snodgrass’s goal was his first of the season – joint with five other players.
  • One guest at the game yesterday was former Saints hero Steve Moran, a striker who scored 22 goals in his first full season at The Dell. He later finished his career at Hull City.
  • A quiet afternoon for Engkland hopefuly Nathan Redmond who struggled in the East Yorkshire cold before he was withdrawn 11 minutes from the end.

WHAT THEY SAID

Hull manager Mike Phelan said: "I'm really pleased for my players. We lost two players early in the game to what look like long injuries.

"The players are ecstatic. I thought we caused our own problems in the first half giving the penalty away and not getting the ball quick enough."

Southampton boss Claude Puel said: "We lacked concentration. We lost the rhythm of the game. It is important for the future that we learn from this situation.

"After a European game it is difficult to keep the same concentration. It is a good lesson for the future."
