MANCHESTER UNITED will bid £30million for Diego Godin to give Jose Mourinho the leader he craves.
And Old Trafford powerbrokers will allow Mourinho to ditch up to EIGHT of his squad before the start of next season.
United want Atletico Madrid centre-half Godin, 30, in the January window and will meet the fee and top his current £70,000-a-week wages by a distance.
Mourinho has told his money men that he needs Godin to sort out his defence after identifying the problems caused by makeshift choices Daley Blind and Marcos Rojo.
Godin has been one of the best players in Spain for years and also a stand-out performer for Uruguay.

The defender is a natural organiser and would help turn United’s back-line into the solid unit which Mourinho’s sides are famous for.
Mourinho will free up room to bring in Godin by beginning a big squad cull when the transfer window opens in January.
Rojo, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Matteo Darmian seem certain to go, while Phil Jones and Michael Carrick appear to have limited United futures.
Morgan Schneiderlin, Memphis Depay and Ashley Young are also expendable over the next two windows.
United will back Mourinho and spend again despite the cost and Godin’s age. At 30, he is at his peak and will still have four top years in him.
Atletico are going for the title and Champions League but cannot stop the move if the fixed-price clause of just over £30m is reached.
