And in his first media event Ferguson was asked about The Vegans' meat-free policy alongside eco owner Dale Vince.

Forest Green are an all-vegan football club and Vince offered Ferguson one of their burgers.

The Scot was asked if he has ever had vegan food, and replied awkwardly saying: "I'm looking forward to trying one. I don't think I have (tried vegan food).

"They look lovely, don't they? Very nice indeed. I look forward to eating that later!"

One wrote: "There's no way Duncan Ferguson even knows what a vegan is."

Another added: "Duncan Ferguson learning chips are vegan. This is football heritage."

A third said: "I’ve always had Ferguson as a raw steak man, not a vegan."
