The Algerian midfielder, 21, has turned out in every Bundesliga game this season - eight times - as well as a pair of outings in the Europa League.

The on-loan Spurs midfielder has been so impressive, the German giants are now all but certain to fork out around £17million in order to bring Bentaleb to the club on a permanent deal in the summer.

Bentaleb has been a key cog for Schalke this term, despite the German sides struggles - currently languishing in 14th out of 18 teams in the top flight.

However, the Algerian is really starting to find his feet at the club - having been exposed to his first considerable run in starting line-up at senior level - even scoring three times in his last two games.

As well as netting in the 1-1 draw at Augsburg, Bentaleb also bagged a brace in Schalke's 3-0 win over Mainz - only their second three-points of the season.

Bentaleb has been on the books of Mauricio Pochettino's Tottenham since 2013 - turning out 46 times in three seasons, including just five times as Spurs looked to snatch the Premier League title last season.

However, with stars such as Dele Alli, Eric Dier, Mousa Dembele and Victor Wanyama all occupying a crowded Spurs midfield, Bentaleb is unlikely to ever force his way back into the White Hart Lane reckoning.

And Tottenham fans will be happy with the £17m price-tag as they look to add even more depth to a squad desperate to get their hands on the top flight crown...
