This was Mourinho’s first return to Stamford Bridge since his sacking last December, but it will certainly be a day he wants to quickly forget.

The defeat means he now has an identical record to David Moyes after his first nine matches in charge.

Goals from Pedro, Gary Cahill, Eden Hazard and N’Golo Kante sealed the victory.

The United chief was asked about the incident in his post match interview but refused to reveal what was said between the pair.

Quizzed by SkySports he said: “It was fine, I was not expecting anything different here. The crowd behaved in a normal way.

“My words were with Antonio Conte were for him, not for you.”
