After the break, Chicarito was adamant he'd opened the scoring after seeing his ball smothered on the line thanks to an incredible stop by Lloris, but the former Manchester United forward's protests were  ignored by the officials.

The Frenchman had to be at his best at the German's poured forward, saving well first from Charles Aranguiz before tipping Admir Mehmedi's shot round the post.

But despite Bayer laying late seige to the Spurs goal, they couldn't find a way past Lloris and Pochettino's side escaped with a point.

Facts, stats, goals & lols

  • TOTTENHAM could have thought they were playing just around the corner as Bayer Leverkusen’s badge is the spit of Leyton Orient’s.
  • BUT Leyton, unlike Leverkusen, does not have the ‘Blow Up Nightclub’ where three of the English Press pack popped into for a late night drink on Monday, only to discover it is not a disco but a brothel. And no, I was not one of them…honest.
  • BEFORE kick-off the home fans held up coloured cards to produce a Crystal Palace-style mosaic celebrating the club’s 30 years of European football. It looked a bit tragic to be honest and would never have made it into Tony Hart’s Gallery.
  • THE 2,500 travelling Tottenham fans made plenty of noise inside the Bay Arena as they belted out a number of old favourites including their rendition of Barry Manilow’s ‘Can’t Smile Without You’.
  • THE Bayer supporters responded with a chant to the tune of the The Beatles’ Yellow Submarine on what felt like a bad karaoke night in the North-Rhine Valley.
  • THE TV screens informed us the Sky Sports Germany commentator working on this game was Tony BAYER! How biased is that? it is like Andy Burton doing Burton matches.
  • VINCENT JANSSEN thought he had put opened the scoring for Tottenham in the 10th minute but his tap-in was ruled out for offside.
  • JANSSEN then headed against the bar in the 38th minute and Erik Lamela’s acrobatic volley from the rebound was tipped over by Leverkusen keeper Bernd Leno.
  • SPURS striker Heung-Min Son was jeered by home fans on his return to his old club and pelted with little red balls when he took a corner just before half time.
  • TOTTENHAM keeper Hugo Lloris did not have a save to make in the first half – but it was a different story after the break.
  • FORMER Manchester United striker Javier Hernandez – and everybody else inside the stadium – thought he had given the hosts the lead in the 48th minute but goal-line technology ruled that Lloris had somehow kept out his sliding shot from three yards, even though it looked in.

WHAT THEY SAID

"I think after two years here and a few months, my third season at Tottenham, only I can say good things for him," Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino on his goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.

"He is a fantastic goalkeeper, one of the best in the world. Today in the second half he was brilliant again."
