Impact had claimed his absence was down to a back injury but coach Mauro Biello confirmed Drogba had refused to play.

He said: "He didn't accept that he would come off the bench and, in the end, he didn't want to be in the 18."

"There was tightness in his back, yes, but he was capable of playing. The organisation will have to handle this."

Drogba, 38, has 21 goals in 32 games for Impact since leaving Chelsea last year.

But he has been used from the bench twice in the last four games despite being on target ten times this season.

The 104-cap Ivory Coast international is one of the MLS' biggest names but is looking towards a future in coaching, possibly at Stamford Bridge.
