9 things we learnt

Granit Xhaka must control his discipline; David Luiz looks comfortable in a back three; Jamie Vardy is a shadow of the striker we saw last season

From the Arsenal midfielder's latest red card to Bob Bradley's Premier League debut, here is what we learnt from England's top flight this weekend

MANCHESTER CITY'S stutter at home to Everton means just six points separate the top seven teams in the Premier League.

Pep Guardiola's side could only manage a draw against old pal Ronald Koeman as Arsenal and Chelsea picked up maximum points.

With Liverpool hosting Manchester United on Monday night, Jurgen Klopp's side can move level on points with Man City at the summit of the table if they win.

At the other end, Sunderland's dismal start to the season continued as they remain rock bottom following a defeat at Stoke.

SunSport brings you nine things we learnt from the Premier League this weekend.

Granit Xhaka must control his discipline

The midfielder received a straight red for a cynical tackle on Modou Barrow in Arsenal's 3-2 victory over Swansea.

The Swiss international deliberately tripped Barrow as the pacy winger was on the break with 20 minutes left on the clock and Arsene Wenger called for Xhaka to learn from his mistakes.

And the gaffer has a point... last season Xhaka picked up three red cards whilst playing for Borussia Monchengladbach. That's more than Diego Costa has had in his whole career.

He has also racked up eight red cards for club and country over two years.

If Arsenal are going to mount a serious title challenge, they will need Xhaka to be on the field for as many minutes as possible.

Welcome back Slaven Bilic

The Croatian has been under pressure after just one win in his first seven matches so all eyes were on the manager ahead of West Ham's clash against Crystal Palace.

With the return of Aaron Cresswell, Bilic changed the formation to play with two wing backs and his tactical tweak worked to perfection.

Michail Antonio was given the freedom to bomb forward whilst Winston Reid was a rock amongst the back three.

The result will lift the confidence amongst the Hammers and they can kick-on from here.

Not going all Pep Guardiola's way

The title race was threatening to look over before it had barely begun after Man City won their first 10 matches of the season.

But Guardiola's side are now three without a win and after failing to play a proper right back against Everton, the first questions are being asked of the manager.

They face Barcelona on Wednesday in one of the most highly-anticipated fixtures this season so far.

Jamie Vardy looks a shadow of the player we saw last season

Although nobody expected Leicester to defend their Premier League title, the Foxes are stuttering and in particular Jamie Vardy.

The striker rarely threatened the Chelsea backline but more importantly his touch and all-round play looks worryingly sloppy.

The England international has just released a book and bought a £2.5million mansion but he needs to concentrate on finding his form and adding to the two goals he has scored this season.

Bob Bradley makes a solid introduction

Not an easy start to Premier League life with an away trip to in-form Arsenal but the Swans made a good game of it and pushed the Gunners all the way.

With Fernando Llorente injured, he started with Gylfi Sigurdsson in a false nine position and the Icelander repaid his faith by scoring Swansea's first.

Bradley will undoubtedly improve his side the more he settles at the club and will soon know his best 11. Expect the Swans to improve on their 19th place in the coming months.

David Luiz is more comfortable in a back three

After a shaky start to his second Chelsea spell, Luiz was quickly being branded a liability at the back particularly after the 3-0 drubbing against Arsenal.

But Antonio Conte went with his favoured three at the back formation and Luiz looked comfortable with more time and space on the ball.

With John Terry back fit, it remains to be seen whether Conte will drop the Brazilian in their huge clash against Manchester United next.

Joy to despair for Hull boss Mike Phelan in the space of 24 hours

Finally, Mike Phelan was named the permanent manager of Hull on Friday before they were thumped 6-1 against Bournemouth in which Phelan described as "embarrassing."

The ex-Man United assistant now has his biggest test - keeping the player's heads up after a run of dreadful form.

Hull haven't won in six with four straight defeats and 17 goals conceded. Phelan's Halloween nightmare may have started early.

Referee Mike Dean has questions to answer

Mike Dean can't help but award penalties. He has dished out 19 spot kicks since the start of last season in the Premier League, more than any other ref.

But he got it all wrong in the Southampton's win over Burnley. He missed a blatant one for Sean Dyche's side in the first half then awarded the visitors a very dubious penalty for grappling from a corner with the score at 3-0.

Don't forget that earlier in the season he was under the microscope for awarding two penalties in Man City's win over Stoke for the same offence.

Sunderland will find the great escape more difficult than ever this season

The Black Cats were dreadful against Stoke. No skill, pace or passion from David Moyes' side.

The boss is trying to keep positive but with a growing injury list they are relying on 34-year-old Jermain Defoe to find the back of the net.

Despite manager upheaval, Defoe keeps banging in the goals for the otherwise misfiring side

Only the veteran striker, Jordan Pickford and possibly Wahbi Khazri came out the game with any credit.

Moyes needs to get that passion back into his side otherwise they will ultimately end up in the Championship.
