Memphis buh-bye

Manchester United transfer news: Flop Memphis Depay to be handed German escape from nightmare to Wolfsburg

The Dutch international has hardly lit Old Trafford alight since his switch from PSV Eindhoven

MEMPHIS DEPAY looks set to be given a lifeline by German club Wolfsburg as his poor start to his Manchester United career continues.

The Dutch international made the switch from PSV Eindhoven to the Red Devils in 2015, but his stay has been plagued with underwhelming performances.

Signed for a hetfy £25 million, United fans will fail to see how he has lived up to that expensive price tag, with him unable to replicate the form he showed in Holland.

After netting an impressive 28 goals as a winger in the 2014/15 season, he was hailed as the next big thing, and was even given the iconic number seven shirt.

A key figure last year under Louis Van Gaal, he made 45 appearances in all competitions, but found the back of the net just seven times - just twice in the Premier League.

With new boss Jose Mourinho taking charge this summer, Depay has found himself an isolated figure in the squad, occupying the bench rather than on the flanks.

So far this season, the 22-year-old has been restricted to a mere 12 minutes of Premier League playing time, spread between three games.

He told Dutch newspaper Metro Nieuws: "I am the same person and I know what I want.

"A supporting role is not for me. I'm a player who is happy with the fact that he is under contract with Manchester United.

"This is my dream club, but I want to play."

According to German news outlet Bild, Bundesliga side Wolfsburg are prepared to bring the wide-man to the Volkswagen Arena in the January transfer window.

With the Dutchman falling in the pecking order behind players such as Juan Mata, Jesse Lingard and Anthony Martial, could Depay rediscover his form away from the Theatre of Dreams?

Next up for Manchester United is away fixture to arch-rivals Liverpool on Monday night where they are hoping to bounce back after their disappointing 1-1 draw at home to Stoke City.
