Spurs face £12milion fee to rename local station ‘Tottenham Hotspur’

North London club attempting to change name of local stop White Hart Lane station

TOTTENHAM face paying up to £12million to Transport for London to rename White Hart Lane station, according to reports.

It is claimed that Spurs want to change the name of the London Overground spot to ‘Tottenham Hotspur Station’ ahead of the opening of their new £400m stadium in 2018.

The station is located close-by to the site of their new 61,000-seater venue and the club are keen to keep it strongly identified with them, particularly as a walkway direct to the new ground is planned to be built.

Spurs, who currently sit second in the Premier League, also want to disassociate from their current iconic home of White Hart Lane as they look for a new naming rights partner to help with financing plans for the new scheme.

TFL are believed to be willing to change the name but only for a fee and as long as the north London side cover all associated costs to change their signage and maps.

claim that Spurs could be asked to pay up to £12m to create the new station, a figure that will shock senior figures within the club.

Their bitter rivals Arsenal famously renamed Gillespie Road underground station in 1932.

The renamed Arsenal station was beside the Gunners’ old Highbury stadium and many fans still use it now to attend matches at the Emirates.

Plans to transform White Hart Lane station were recommended for approval at a Haringey Council planning sub committee hearing earlier this week and the new-look station is expected to be ready in time for Spurs’ return to the area in 2018.

They are expected to pay £15m in rent to play at Wembley next season after moving out of their current home at the end of the current campaign so that work can be completed on the new site.

The new ground is estimated to cost between £400 and 450m while work on the rest of the scheme – including 585 new homes, a 180-bedroom hotel, offices, a health centre and a club museum – will take the total cost of the project up to more than £700m.
