Ex-England defender John Terry believes Wayne Rooney deserves more respect after being dropped by Gareth Southgate

Veteran Chelsea captain highlights the records Rooney has broken and describes him as a 'great man.'

JOHN TERRY has demanded England fans show "legend" Wayne Rooney more respect.

The England skipper has been dropped by interim boss Gareth Southgate ahead of the Three Lions' clash in Slovenia on Tuesday night.

And although Rooney's recent form has seen him banished to the substitute bench for club and country, Terry believes record-breaker Rooney doesn't deserve his recent backlash.

In an Instagram post he said: "Wayne Rooney, England's highest record goalscorer in the history of our game.

"Soon to be the most capped player our great country has ever produced.

"One of the very best players I have seen and had the pleasure playing with in my lifetime and a man who has given everything to England.

"An absolute LEGEND at Everton, Man Utd, England and worlds football. We should all show more respect to this great player and man.

"Let's all get behind Wayne and the England team tomorrow."

Despite hearing the news that the Manchester United forward is not in Southgate's plans, Rooney vows he still has much to offer.

He said: “I feel I’ve a lot to offer. I am not suddenly going to turn round and say, ‘I’m not playing, I’m not going to turn up’.

“I know I can be a big help for the other players, whether I’m playing or not."

Southgate heads into the fixture against Slovenia on the back of a 2-0 victory over Malta last Saturday.

England has won their last 14 major tournament qualifiers and have beaten their opponents in their last four meetings.
