That means either Gary Cahill or Jordan Henderson will wear the England armband against their Group F opponents.

Sky Sports anchor Jim White tweeted: "It's my understanding that Wayne Rooney won't start in Slovenia - Cahill or Henderson will captain England."

It's not just England that have looked at dropping Rooney, who is 31 this month.

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has been forced to relegate the forward to the bench after a series of below-par performances for the Red Devils.

He came off the bench during United's 1-1 draw with Stoke and could not inspire his side to the three points despite fellow sub Anthony Martial scoring the opener.
