Ryan Bertrand’s new season with England wrecked by hamstring injury after just 19 minutes of Malta mauling
Southampton star was given the confidence boost of starting Gareth Southgate’s first match ahead of Tottenham full-back Danny Rose
RYAN BERTRAND’S new season with England lasted just 19 minutes after the Southampton defender was subbed with a worrying hamstring injury.
The left-back took off on a trademark surging run down up the wing against Malta on Saturday night at Wembley but was soon clutching the back of his thigh and hobbling off, which could rule him out for Saints and Gareth Southgate’s reformed sinners for a number of weeks.
The former Chelsea ace will miss the next World Cup 2018 qualifier in Slovenia on Tuesday and will have Premier League manager Claude Puel concerned over upcoming top-flight clashes with Burnley, Manchester City and Chelsea before the end of October.
Bertrand was given the confidence boost of starting Southgate’s first match ahead of Tottenham full-back Danny Rose.
But it was the Spurs man who had to replace him almost 10 minutes before Daniel Sturridge headed the home side into the lead against the minnows.
