ARGENTINA face a struggle to reach Russia 2018 as they were held in their World Cup qualifier against Peru on Thursday.
Without talisman Lionel Messi, Edgardo Bauza’s side could only muster a 2-2 draw to drop them to fifth in the South American group.
Bauza had claimed his side could cope without Barca star Messi ahead of the clash, but after recording their second successive draw since being deprived of the star, they need him back as soon as possible.
The top four from the group progress automatically, with fifth place facing a play-off against the Oceania winners for a spot at the showpiece in two years’ time.
Everton's Ramiro Funes Mori went from hero to villain for the South American giants. After putting Argentina ahead on 15 minutes, he was then at fault for Peru's late penalty equaliser that was scored by Christian Cueva.

After nine matches, the halfway point, Uruguay top the table on 19 points followed by Brazil with 18. Ecuador, Colombia and Argentina all on 16 while Peru climbed one place to eighth with eight points.
