Arsenal legend Ian Wright’s grandson D’Margio, 20, signs bumper new Stoke contract after first-team breakthrough

ARSENAL legend Ian Wright’s grandson D’Margio Wright-Phillips has been handed a bumper new Stoke City contract.

The 20-year-old winger broke into Michael O’Neill’s team last season after a move from Manchester City.

D’Margio, son of ex-City and Chelsea star Shaun Wright-Phillips, scored his first goal for the Potters in January.

And he was swiftly rewarded with improved terms until 2024.

But the ace’s impact has been so great that Stoke have once again handed him a fresh deal on improved terms.

The contract will still run until 2024, but this time it also includes the option for an extra season.

D’Margio could not contain his excitement at being given a greater standing in Stoke’s senior set-up.

He told the club’s official website: “I’m very happy to be here and I can’t wait to get the season going.

“Michael O’Neill has been a massive influence on me - I broke in quite quickly and he’s been like a father figure towards me.

“The coaches have been very influential too, staying out with me after training, doing shooting and other little bits that can help improve my game.”

Stoke’s Head of Football Operations, Andy Cousins, added: “When D’Margio joined us from Manchester City he came in on a short-term deal because he had to prove himself but he worked really hard on that.

“He has made good progress and he’s now moving on to more of a first-team contract, which is what we feel he deserves.”

Grandad Ian was left feeling emotional after watching D’Margio make his Stoke debut in January.

But he wasn’t impressed when the kid claimed he was a better finisher than the Gunners legend.

D’Margio said: “It’s the low centre of gravity, the confidence to try and take on a player.

“With my grandad, I’d say I think I’ve got better finishing than him.

“He’s full of emotions. I’m the third generation and he’s wanted to see me play for a long time now.”

This saw Wrighty respond: “Look at the chest on this yute.”
