Talks were held with Villarreal about a potential £35m move for Dutch winger Danjuma, but agreeing personal terms have proven to be a sticking point.

The Spanish side are open to selling to raise funds for improvements to their squad, but West Ham boss David Moyes now has eyes elsewhere after complications with Danjuma.

Moyes is a big fan of Lingard – who was released by Manchester United this summer – after his four-month loan spell from January 2021.

Scoring nine goals in 16 games, Moyes hopes the 29-year-old’s return to the London Stadium could increase their goal threat up top.

However, with several other sides interested, including Newcastle, it is understood Lingard would need to drop his wage demands to sign for the east London club permanently.

West Ham have already been busy in this window, snapping up Rennes defender Nayef Aguerd and another former loanee in PSG keeper Alphonse Areola for a combined £40m.

Their main attacking target is Chelsea striker Armando Broja – who impressed on loan at Southampton last season.

Blues manager Thomas Tuchel and new owner Todd Boehly want to look at Broja during pre-season before making any decisions on the 20-year-old’s future.

West Ham have also spoken to Chelsea about Declan Rice, telling the Blues they will not accept an offer below their £150million asking price.
