The midlands club decided to swing the axe at Villa Park after the 2-0 defeat at Preston left them just two points clear of the Championship relegation zone.
And they already have two stand-out candidates in their sights - former Hull manager Bruce and Bristol City boss Johnson.
Bruce is currently a free agent after deciding to quit Hull just before the start of the season despite leading them to promotion to the Premier League.
Villa know he has vast experience of bringing success at Championship level, and the fact he is available is a huge attraction.
But they have also been impressed by the work Johnson has been doing at Bristol City on a limited budget.
The 35-year-old is regarded as one of the brightest up and coming managers in the game having proven himself at Oldham and now Ashton Gate.
