Hungary 1 England 0 LIVE REACTION: Tamed Three Lions suffer humiliating first defeat to Hungarians in 60 years – updates

ENGLAND threw away a sixty year record as they were disappointingly beaten by Hungary for the first time since 1962.

Reece James was harshly penalised for a soft touch on Zsolt Nagy in the penalty area within minutes of entering the frame.

And Hungarian talisman Dominik Szoboszlai welcomed the gift with open arms when he rifled his spot-kick into the bottom corner of Jordan Pickford's net.

But it's admittedly nothing less than England deserve having displayed a poor showing which will be a worry for Gareth Southgate as they have tougher opposition to come.

Shape up for Qatar success

The size of the task at hand has been underpinned to Gareth Southgate today if it wasn't clear already.

There are plenty of sides who will be bidding for glory in the World Cup who would brush a side like Hungary aside.

England need to raise the bar considerably to be thought upon as a side who could realistically win the tournament.

Rooney's record stands firm

Whether it is the pressure he is feeling from the media to break the all-time England goalscoring record or not, it was a night Harry Kane will remember.

A game of few chances for the England marksman and those that did fall to him were snatched at.

He carries the extra burden of being captain so when the chips are down he is expected to lift his side.

Hungary humble Three Lions

With all the talk going into this game being about the behaviour of the Hungarian fans in previous games, nobody gave Marco Rossi's side a chance of claiming any sort of upset.

Once they weathered the early storm, they grew into the game and often looked the most likely team to score.

The warnings were there for England, they did not heed them.

He's not the messiah....

Gareth Southgate will rue his side's luck today and will point at a very softly awarded penalty.

Aside from the penalty, England did not do enough to break their opponents down and looked devoid of ideas at times.

This is not the kind of warm-up England fans wanted for the World Cup.

FT: Hungary 1-0 England

The referee brings the game to an end.

30,000 fans celebrate as they see their team beat England for the first time in 60 years.

What a time to be alive.

Unless of course you are Gareth Southgate.

On this occasion it was a poor delivery and the ball evades everyone in an England shirt.

Reece James is shown a yellow card.

Hungary 1-0 England

Reece James does well down the right and looks to cross.

The ball is intercepted once again by a Hungary defender.

Drawing in fouls from England before taking their time with the set piece.

86. Time is running out for England.

The lack of urgency in their play in this game is going to ultimately cost them.

A wall of red stands in between them and Gulácsi anytime they come forward.

Hungary 1-0 England - Kane chance

84. James feeds the ball through the channel for Kane.

It sees the England striker one on one with only the keeper to beat from a slightly tight angle.

He tries to chip the keeper but the effort makes for an easy save as he gets it all wrong.

Hungary 1-0 England

82. Confidence will have been high in the England camp before this international break with talk of Qatar.

They should be 2-0 down as Pickford makes a save but parries the ball to the feet of Schäfer.

Somehow he puts the ball over the bar when it seemed easier to score.

Hungary 1-0 England

80. Phillips comes on for Coady.

Last roll of the dice from Gareth Southgate.

England changing into a flat back four from their five.

Needing more options in the attacking areas to try and find an equaliser.

His glancing header seems destined for the bottom corner but goes inches wide of the post.

It may well be one of those evenings for The Three Lions.

Hungary 1-0 England

76. England seem to be lacking ideas.

Often resorting to long searching balls that are either overhit or wayward and do not find their target.

Having to try defence-splitting passes all of the time to progress forward.

Southgate needs more adventure from his players.

It seemed a very harsh penalty decision.

No denying the finish from Szoboszlai, burying the ball in the bottom corner.

Replaced by James, Grealish and Stones.

Southgate looking to change things up here.

60. Kane is dropping into wide areas to try and make something happen for the visitors.

The problem with this, when he looks up to deliver, Harry Kane is no longer making the required runs in the box.

Maguire heads the ball over the bar from another set piece.
