Security guards were forced to step in as Drogba approached the rowdy pair at the Red Bull Arena.

The Ivory Coast legend - who registered just one shot on target in the defeat - eventually returned to the dressing room with team-mate Matteo Mancosu after appearing to apologise to nearby fans.

A video of the altercation was recorded by journalist Matthew Klimberg, before Drogba shed light on the situation to TVA Sports in Montreal.

He said: "There were two fans who were showing their enthusiasm a little too much.

"They crossed the line a bit, that's all."

The incident came just hours after the ex-Blues star had goaded Arsenal's Theo Walcott on Twitter, following the Gunners' 3-0 win against his old side on Saturday.

Drogba tweeted: "Congrats on your win bro @theowalcott but it is easy for the mouses to dance when the cats aren't there."

His post was in reply to a picture uploaded by Walcott, showing the Arsenal forward celebrating and captioned: "3-0"

Drogba terrorised the Gunners during his spell at Stamford Bridge, scoring 15 goals in 16 games against them.

However, despite scoring two in his last four games for Montreal, the MLS club have lost their last three games and slipped to fifth in the Eastern Conference standings.

Impact are just one point above sixth-placed DC United, who occupy the final play-off place, and two ahead of New England Revolution in seventh with four season games remaining.

Red Bulls are already guaranteed a play-off spot and are level on points with Toronto at the top of the Eastern Conference.
