Guard-ed response

Pep Guardiola refuses to talk about Premier League title and says top four finish will be ‘tough’ for Manchester City

Despite winning his first six games and enjoying a four-point lead, the Etihad boss isn't getting ahead of himself.

PEP GUARDIOLA says he never thought Man City would be so successful at this early stage of his reign at the Etihad.

The Spaniard's side have won all their first six league games and three European matches to open up a four-point lead at the top of the Premier League.

Yesterday's 3-1 victory over Swansea made it back to back wins at the Liberty Stadium following their 2-1 EFL Cup triumph in midweek.

"I didn't think about what might happen at the start of the season," Guardiola told the Man City website.

"We just focused on pre-season, and then we took a lot of confidence from our Champions League qualifying games, and then it's been game by game.

"Now we are thinking of Celtic, and then it will be Tottenham and that's how we'll go forward.

At this stage Pep's side are overwhelming favourites for the title and, while Chelsea finished 10th last season, it would be a huge shock to see City finish anywhere below 4th place.

However the former Barcelona boss believes Champions League qualification will be tough and says even the likes of Everton could pose a threat.

"I honestly just think qualifying for [next season's] Champions League will be very tough," he said.

"[Manchester] United played really well [against Leicester], Liverpool are especially playing very well, as are Tottenham and Arsenal.

"Everton may have lost on Saturday, but they are all so, so strong."

City travel to Parkhead on Wednesday night to take on Celtic before playing high-flying Spurs next Sunday.

But they are set to be without Kevin De Bruyne for the Battle of Britain clash after he picked up a hamstring injury.

"It looks like it was muscular, but I am not a doctor. It is a pity because he is an important player," said Guardiola.

"That's why we have to have a big squad as everyone will help us."
