It meant Fulham's talisman broke the record mark set by Portsmouth striker Guy Whittingham 29 years ago.

Mitrovic said: "I know I've always tried to say I've not thought about the record.

“But when you're that close and everybody starts talking about it, so of course I wanted to break it - and now it’s happened.

"It was special in a big win.

“So I think we finished the season like we dreamed, like we wanted with a big win at home in front of our crowd and I broke the record - everything was perfect."

Mitrovic’s second goal, with virtually the final touch of the game, means Marco Silva’s men can set an all-time Championship record if they score three at Sheffield United on Saturday.

Silva said: “He’s been brilliant, really brilliant.

“You could see how much the fans wanted him to get that second goal to break the record and we wanted to help him as well.

“I told him to play as high as he could for the last 15 minutes to get the goal because he deserved it.”

Midfielder Tom Cairney, who started the rout over the hapless Hatters, admitted: “To do it at home in front of your fans and be champions of the league.

“No matter what it is and what standard, it lives forever. It's amazing and it's something I'm really proud of.

"Last time we got promoted the celebrations went on a few days.

“But if you don't enjoy these moments then what's the point? We have had some bad days and tough days.”

Asked about Mitrovic’s goal feats, Cairney added: "As a team we create a hell of a lot of chances.

“It also tells you about a person with a special talent.

“For him to score 43 Championship goals is astounding.

“He deserves all the plaudits and he's a top striker. He has proven it at international level, if he gets a chance he will score."
