As revealed exclusively by SunSport, the Red Devils are plotting to launch a sensational £30million bid for their former player in January.

United have already brought Paul Pogba back to Old Trafford, and Jose Mourinho wants to pair him with the industrious Drinkwater following an indifferent start to the campaign.

Wayne Rooney and Co halted a run of three consecutive defeats with a win against Northampton in the EFL Cup on Wednesday night, but fans have not been too impressed with the new regime.

Midfield seems to be the main talking point, and Drinkwater could be the right man to shore things up next year.

But Leicester boss Ranieri has no intention of selling one of his star men, although he admits United’s interest proves the current champions are heading in the right direction.

Ranieri said: “It’s speculation. I’m surprised, because it’s usually a month before the window opens that this sort of speculation starts.

“But now, is good. When big teams want our players, it is good for us. One year ago, no-one was asking about our players. Now there are big, big teams asking.

“Now they must be proud, but continue in this way. He [Drinkwater] has signed a new contract, he doesn’t have a [release] clause. If he wants to go to Man U, OK, but we want to keep him.”
