FURIOUS fans have taken to Twitter to slam Manchester United legend Phil Neville for jumping to the defence of his pal Wayne Rooney.

The skipper who turns 31 next month turned in yet another lacklustre performance against Northampton Town on Wednesday night - yet Neville insists Rooney should start this weekend.

"He will start, for me, on Saturday. I think he is still an important player in this team,"

"You can see with his performance that he is not playing at the top level, his game isn't flowing and things aren't coming easily to him but it was important for him to get out there and play another 90 minutes."

Jose Mourinho's 3-1 win ended the side's three-match losing streak ahead of the visit of Premier League champions Leicester in this weekend's lunchtime kick off.

Neville added: "He wants to be a centre forward or he wants to be a central midfield player but he doesn't want to be stuck on the right wing.

"At the moment that is having a massive effect on his performance."

Criticism of Rooney has been picking up pace this season with United fans beginning to question the skipper's place in the starting XI.

Rooney's recent dismal displays further prove the irreversible decline of the England captain and it could finally be time for Mourinho to drop him.

United's EFL Cup win sees the Red Devils secure a home draw against arch-rivals Manchester City in the next round of the competition.
