Michael Carrick opened the scoring for United against Northampton

MICHAEL CARRICK inspired Manchester United to a 3-1 over Northampton in the EFL Cup.

The veteran midfielder opened the scoring for Jose Mourinho’s men after just 17 minutes.

Alex Revell gave his side hope just before half-time with a well-taken penalty.

But Ander Herrera came to United’s rescue with a rocket in the 68^th minute.

And Marcus Rashford made sure his side progressed to the fourth round when he found the back of the net eight minutes later.

United can now look forward to facing arch-rivals Manchester City, and will be hoping to avenge the recent 2-1 Premier League defeat at Old Trafford.
