But they could face some stiff competition from the Gunners and the Premier League champions Leicester.

The reports will not please many Arsenal fans who were angered when Arsene Wenger only bought midfielders and defenders in the summer.

The Gunners are fully stocked in the middle of the park with the likes of Granit Xhaka, Francis Coquelin, Mohamed Elneny, Aaron Ramsey and Santi Cazorla.

Leicester seem just as beefed up in midfield meaning Mesa would have to compete with Nampalys Mendy, Daniel Amartey and England international Danny Drinkwater.
