However, Antonio Conte will nor risk the 35-year-old against Leicester City in the EFL Cup this evening at the King Power Stadium.

Talk of a return to the England camp continue to swirl around the former Three Lions skipper, with Sam Allardyce still yet to settle on a regular set of defenders.

Chelsea play Leicester tonight and then again after the international break, before welcoming Jose Mourinho's Manchester United to Stamford Bridge.

Antonio Conte said: "We are disappointed about the defeat against Liverpool but during training I've seen the right intensity, the right commitment from the players. It's been a good response.

"It's a big week because we face two very strong teams. Leicester won the title last season and Arsenal are a great team that will fight for the title.

"It's a big week but we are ready."
