‘Man Utd is my life’ – Jaap Stam admits he’d accept United boss job in a heartbeat but is keen to help club in any way

JAAP STAM has admitted that he would jump at the chance to coach Manchester United.

The Dutchman, 49, cemented himself as a popular figure at Old Trafford during a three-year stint as a player between 1998 and 2001.

Since hanging up his boots in 2007, Stam has embarked on a career in coaching.

Currently out of work, he has admitted that he would revel in the opportunity to return to the Theatre of Dreams in some capacity.

He told : "If they would ask me (to take a coaching/managerial role), I would do it straight away without a doubt.

“You know United is my life as well. I’ve had great seasons over there, won trophies and it’s been very important for me.

"In any way, if I could help them out, I would be tempted to do it."

Stam managed Reading, PEC Zwolle and Feyenoord, before most recently taking charge of MLS side FC Cincinnati in 2020.

He was sacked last September after winning just eight of his 47 games in charge in all competitions.

While admitting that he'd be unlikely to ever get the top job at United, Stam revealed that he'd happily help out in other capacities.

He added: "I know they are probably not going to come and call me, but also in a different role, and that counts I think for every player who has played for United.

"I think everyone is very eager to help the club and hopefully, bring them to the absolute top level.

"Like I said, you never know, that would be interesting.

"It’s all about owners, it’s all about technical directors, it’s all about coaches that step in, who do they want as assistant coaches.

"That’s how it goes."
